Last year, a YouTuber who goes by the name “Bito” uploaded a video of his GoPro Camera recording the entire wash cycle inside a dishwasher. You can see it here:
This little stunt proved to be a winner in terms of “viral video”. He probably never expected this simple video to blow up all over social media, but it did.
He currently has close to 5 million views just in the last year. Assuming that you monetize your videos, you’ll earn between $10,000 & $12,000 per million views.
If you translate that into YouTube ad revenue for the year, he could have made $50-60K from a single video.
But here’s the kicker – He didn’t monetize it! There are no ads on his videos.
He missed out on creating a substantial passive income stream over the past year. I sent him a message that he needs to monetize it while it’s still so popular. In just the last 4 days, it’s had around 700,000 views.
This guy probably never expected to earn much from his videos, so he didn’t bother with putting ads on them.
I looked at his channel, and he only has about 20 videos total. His next highest video is one of him testing a new impact driver. It has only 8,102 views. They are all just random videos of different things.
So this guy never expected to hit a grand slam; but in terms of views, he hit this one out of the park.
Let this sink in. Here is a potential of $50,000 or more in completely passive income over the last year that he could have used to:
- Pay off a student loan
- Pay off a house
- Invest in a new business venture
- Buy real estate
So the lesson here is simple – Monetize your videos if you are creating something interesting and unique. You never know; it just may go viral.
YouTube wants to pay you money for your videos. Let them!
A great book on understanding what makes videos go viral is The Viral Video Manifesto by Stephen Voltz and Fritz Grobe. These are the guys who did the Mentos and Coke video years ago.
