If you’ve never read the story Acres of Diamonds, I’d recommend reading it when you get a chance. It started as a speech given by Russell Conwell. The moral of the story is simple – When looking for diamonds, start in your own backyard instead of journeying to the far ends of the earth. As often is the case, most people start their first online business project by endlessly researching the niche that will make them the most money instead of first considering what they already know about or have experience in. They look far and wide without first considering the diamonds under their own two feet.
This week’s interview is a prime example. We had the opportunity to interview Jordan Reasoner and Steve Wright of SCDLifestyle.com. Jordan and Steve both graduated with engineering degrees a few years ago, but they both quickly realized after beginning their new jobs, that “trading time for dollars” was not what they wanted to do the rest of their lives. Instead they decided they wanted to start creating passive income online.
Instead of looking for what would make them the most money, they decided to start with something they both had personal experience with – intestinal problems. Jordan had been diagnose with Celiac disease and had decided to try a specific diet that that eventually led to his healing. Jordan shared his success with Steve who incidentally had been suffering from IBS, After both experienced incredible results from it, they realized that this was something they needed to share with others. They began by writing an ebook about the diet and their own personal experience from it, and after 2 months of completing it, were selling 15 copies a month!
The great lesson in this interview is that they didn’t spend all of their time doing research on this niche; in fact, the keywords weren’t that strong. They just started with something they knew about. Something that worked for them. Something they thought others could benefit greatly from.
They started by mining under their own feet, which is a great lesson for us all. You’ll get to hear about their own journey of success in this interview.
