There are few things more valuable in this world than a network of close friends and family who come together for support in times of difficulty or tragedy. Our guest this week gives a wonderful example of this as it relates to not only “local communities” but also “online communities” as well.
We welcome blogger Kelly Crawford, aka the “Word Warrior” on the show. Kelly is the mother of 9 children and founder of Generation Cedar, a family-run ministry website and business that encourages other Christian families.
Journey Through the Storm
In April of 2011, Kelly and her family of 11 experienced what is was like to lose almost everything they had when an F5 tornado raked a path of destruction across their family farm, leveling almost everything and ripping their house right off the foundation.
Thankfully they were all safe in basement when this all happened. But as Kelly describes, when they came out of the basement and looked up at where a ceiling once was, there was nothing but sky.
Over a year after this experience, they’re still getting back on their feet. It’s been filled with challenges, but thanks to their enormous faith in God and the network of friends and family who’ve been there to help, they’ve been able to get through it.
One of the networks of support has been through the online community Kelly has developed through her blog.
38K in Debt to Profitable Blogging Business
Years back, when Kelly was the mother of four she and her husband had accumulated $38,00 of credit card debt trying to establish their own business. Kelly describes herself as always having an “indomitable entrepreneural spirit”, so after some research, she found information on skin product recipes, and began making homemade skin products as gifts for friends and family.
That eventually blossomed into a business on the side, but she was faced with a problem. In order to grow this business startup she needed to market it, and having 4 children to take care left very little time for that.
Kelly’s business-savvy brother suggested that she start a blog to advertise her skin care products. Having a natural passion for controversial topics, she now found her new outlet! She loved to write and because a blog is fluid and constantly being updated, she began building traffic to it.
Today, Kelly has an active community of subscribers at Generation Cedar. As I mentioned earlier, this online community reached out to Kelly and her family in the aftermath of last year’s tornado. People she’d never met in person were offering help to her family. What a blessing!
The site helps to support their family by generating income in multiple ways. She has now written 8 ebooks so far on topics ranging from Finding Financial Freedom to Easy Health for Busy Moms.
She also gets advertising revenue from other blogs and/businesses and also makes affiliate sales.
Kelly also has a membership site where she teaches others “How to Make Money Blogging”. You can find this site over at www.homepaidblogger.com.
I encourage you to read more about Kelly’s series “Journey Through the Storm“, as she chronicles their experiences after the tornado.
Hope everyone enjoys the interview.
Have a great week!
