One of my favorite marketing books of all time is Purple Cow by Seth Godin. His message clear. If you want to stand out in a crowded marketplace, you have to be different. No one notices the brow cow, but a purple… well now that’s a horse ..I mean cow of a different color.
That’s the theme of our podcast this week – “How to Stand Out in a Crowded Marketplace“.
Steve Kamb, our guest this week is a great example of how to make this happen in your own niche. Steve is the owner of NerdFitness.com, a fitness site and online community dedicated to helping people stay fit.
Ok, so I know what comes to a lot of people’s minds when they hear about the “fitness niche”.
You’re thinking “isn’t that market over- saturated already with so many other weight loss, strength training, and muscle building sites?”
The answer to that can be “yes and no”.
Yes, if you want to create another general vanilla fitness site that mirrors what everyone else is saying. But no if you decide you want to be that “purple cow” in that industry.
That was the turning point as Steve describes in his own online business. In this interview, he talks about how things begin to turn around when he stopped presenting his content the same boring way as everyone else and started becoming more engaging and authentic.
He credits Adam Baker’s post How to NOT Suck at Blogging as a big reason for this change.
Steve decided to change his approach and begin embracing the “nerd” theme of Nerd Fitness. He would write blogs, relating his workouts to Batman, Star Wars and even the Legend of Zelda.
Almost immediately after changing his approach, he began to see results. He almost tripled his subscribers within that next month.
Steve also stopped writing short blog posts 5 day a week and instead concentrated on writing a lengthier 2,000 word article post twice a week. In doing so, He focused on delivering more quality in his content than quantity.
He generates a big chunk of his income by producing high quality information products. You can see all of his “rebel guides” here.
I’m an avid runner so I bought his “Rebel Running Guide. It’s awesome!
In addition, you’ll hear Steve talk talk about his main keys to creating a full time income in a crowded niche:
- How to he’s build a community of over 35,000 raving fan subscribers, or “rebels” as they call themselves.
- When he made the decision to “pull the plug” on his day job.
- How he sold 120 copies of his first $39 ebook in 2-3 days
