This week, I had the pleasure of interviewing my friend Leroy Leese about the topic of “passion” when it comes to building an online business.
He shared a powerful story that I think will benefit any of our listeners who are looking for the right business. Leroy is a software engineer who also has a passion for cars and drag racing.
He’s the founder of www.DragTracker.com, a site that provides tools and apps for helping drag racers be more consistent and competitive. He also has a podcast within the drag racing community called, “The Winners Circle”.
Racing has been apart of his family for a long time and you can tell just from talking to him, he has a true love for the sport.
That said, Leroy went down a different path before launching “Drag Tracker”. His first venture involved little yellow rubber ducks.
That’s right, a car racing guy saw potential in “little yellow rubber duckies”.
His first venture, sendaduck.com started out with huge potential. The idea was simple. You could order little yellow rubber ducks, add custom messages to them, and send them out to anyone.
But as the business began to grow, so did the problems; and this simple little idea started to turn into a huge headache. Leroy shares the problems he ran into in our interview.
Needless to say, the logistic problems, customer complaints and his overall lack of passion for this business niche drained his motivation and energy.
Looking back, Leroy identifies one of the biggest lessons that we talk about regularly – the importance of starting a business around your passion and expertise.
Having the unique expertise of software engineering and drag racing, he decided it was time to move into a direction that merged his passion and his expertise with Dragtracker.com.
Leroy has slowly built a community within the drag racing niche through the tools and resources he provides to racing enthusiasts. He’s growing his podcast community and YouTube channel and plans to add some sponsors once he has thirty or more episodes launched.
In this interview, you’ll hear Leroy and I discuss some valuable takeaways:
- The 3 components that you need to have in place before launching an online business (hint: we just discussed one – passion)
- Why perfectionism will sink your business, and how to overcome it
- Why it’s so important to build a community in your niche market and how to do it through podcasting, YouTube, etc.
Enjoy the interview.
