This week, Brian Nickerson co-founder and CEO of Chippmunk.com joins me on the show. Brian shares a great personal story of his own road to success in business.
At the age of twelve, Brian knew what he wanted to do when he got older. His two biggest goals were to play professional baseball and be an entrepreneur.
He played baseball in college at Dartmouth, and served as the only 3-year captain since baseball started at Dartmouth in 1866. He was inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers where he spent a few years in minor league.
As Brian says in the interview, baseball taught him some great business lessons. One particular lesson is that failure is part of the game. There are good days and bad days. You just have to keep your head up and continue improving each day.
After his time in baseball, Brian decided to pursue his next favorite passion – entrepreneurship. He decided to go back and get his MBA, and was accepted to Harvard business school.
After getting an MBA, he landed his first job at Yahoo working in Operations Finance, where he helped predict and measure the impact of major search auction marketplace product launches.
But even with a great job working at Yahoo, Brian wanted more. An entrepreneur at heart, he kept coming back to a business idea that just kept percolating in his mind. In fact Brian says he would wake up at 5 am every morning with it on his mind.
For him that was a clear indicator that it was time to leave the corporate world behind with it’s great salary and benefits and go create something from scratch.
In September of 2012 Brian along with his co-founders Christian Levy and Samira Mahjoub Tapia launched Chippmunk.com – an online coupon search engine that takes savings information from stores and compiles it so consumers can quickly see which stores are offering the best deals. They do this with something called the CouponRankTM algorithm.
As Brian describes, one of Chippmunk’s biggest growth drivers has been Chippmunk Rewards, a B2B tool for YouTubers, bloggers and podcasters to monetize their channels and sites using coupons and affiliate links.
Product reviewers have especially been big users of Chippmunk Rewards. One big reason is because these content creators love using special coupon deals to entice their audience to buy through them.
Also, Brian explains than Chippmunk Rewards is the only affiliate tool designed to avoid Cookie Cannibalization.
This occurs when a user navigates to a product at a retail store, decides to buy, and then at the last minute does a search for a coupon code from that retailer, which results in the affiliate cookie being re-written by another website at the last possible minute.
He explains that by using Chippmunk Rewards, vloggers and podcasters can avoid cookie cannibalization by including the coupon for the user as part of the link process. This results in conversion rates than are 5-10X higher than when a coupon is not provided!
In many cases their affiliate commission payout is 10% and more – much higher than Amazon.
You can see a list of retailers and products categories at http://www.chippmunk.com/stores.
You can also sign up as an affiliate to start receiving Chippmnk rewards at http://rewards.chippmunk.com/rewards/join.
In this interview Brian will share some great takeaways like:
- Why there are more YouTube videos watched than search queries put into Google and what that means for you.
- How YouTube content creators can increase their online passive income using Chippmunk rewards.
- Why coupons links are more effective at increasing conversion rates.
Enjoy the show!
