I almost titled this article “5 Steps to Writing Your First Book”, but for some reason that just didn’t seem right for this week’s interview, because the lessons are much deeper than the simple “How To’s”.
Sutton Parks joined us this week to talk about his new book You Can Sleep In Your Car, But You Can’t Drive Your House To Work: How I overcame depression, foreclosure, addiction and homelessness by expressing gratitude. We had a chance to catch up with Sutton back in April at Podcamp Nashville, where he gave a session on “Why You Should Write a Book (and How to Do It)”. While we were talking, he pulled out a copy of his book and gave it to me (a great lesson for authors – always have some copies ready to give out).
I had a chance recently to sit down and read about his story and after learning of the obstacles Sutton’s had to overcome, I really wanted to have him join us on the show. This is not one of our typical interviews about online business, but it is important for the simple but powerful lesson – Having an “attitude of gratitude” every day can change your perspective on life.
It’s a reminder that we should all be thankful for what God has blessed us with. And if you’re someone who believes that your success is due to your own ability alone, then I’ll simply ask – where did you receive the mind to conceptualize and the hands to create?
Sutton shares some very personal moments in his life; like his struggle with alcohol addiction; The time he attempted suicide in his own garage; and the time the sheriff and and deputies showed up at his house with hefty bags to serve repossession papers.
Along the journey back up, Sutton learned the importance of expressing gratitude in everyday life. Sutton is now an accomplished musician, composer and songwriter who uses his passion for music as a way to share his story with others. He also owns his owns his own business and speaks with passion to audiences on the subjects of recovery, possibility thinking and gratitude.
Sutton will also be sharing with us his 5 step process for getting his book written and published – Great advice for anyone who’s ready to write their first book.
His story is one we can all learn from, and I hope you enjoy hearing it and reading about it as much as I did. You can keep up with Sutton on his blog at SuttonParks.com.
Have a great weekend everyone! 🙂
