This week, I ordered a USB/USB Microphone Cable to see how well it worked by hooking my Heil PR-40 microphone directly into my Macbook Pro. The PR-40 is an XLR mic but with this cable, I can hook it into my USB port.
After doing a Skype call test and then a test recording in Garage Band, I’ve determined this is an excellent way to start out without the need to lug around a mixer.
This is definitely what I’ll be using when recording Skype interviews away from the office. Does this mean I no longer need my sound mixer? Not exactly.
There’s still plenty of reasons to have a sound mixer for your podcast. The biggest being that I prefer recording into a digital recorder (that’s hooked to the mixer) rather than into my computer.
If you’re on a budget though, you don’t need to get a mixer right away. You can get by just fine using this inexpensive cable. Spend the money first on either a high quality mic like the Heil PR-40or a high speed digital recorder like the Zoom H4N.
